These are too delightful <i>not<\/i> to share (click through for the full versions):<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.loc.gov\/poetry\/180\/001.html\">Introduction to Poetry<\/a><br \/>\n<blockquote><p>\n&#8230; all they want to do<br \/>\nis tie the poem to a chair with rope<br \/>\nand torture a confession out of it&#8230;\n<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.edutopia.org\/trouble-poetry\">The Trouble with Poetry<\/a><br \/>\n<blockquote><p>\n&#8230; the trouble with poetry is<br \/>\nthat it encourages the writing of more poetry,<br \/>\nmore guppies crowding the fish tank, &#8230;\n<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<li> <a href=\"http:\/\/www.billy-collins.com\/2005\/06\/sonnet_billy_co.html\">Sonnet<\/a><br \/>\n<blockquote><p>\nAll we need is fourteen lines, well, thirteen now,<br \/>\nand after this one just a dozen&#8230;\n<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<\/ul>\n<p>All three poems are by the talented <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Billy_Collins\">Billy Collins<\/a>, who was the <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/United_States_Poet_Laureate\">U.S. Poet Laureate<\/a> from 2001&#8211;2003.  He is also the man behind <a href=\"http:\/\/www.loc.gov\/poetry\/180\/\">Poetry 180<\/a>, which aims to give high school students a taste of poetry every day of the school year.  I admire his dedication to his work as well as his ability to step back and poke fun at it, in a clearly  affectionate way.<\/p>\n<p>His meta-poetry is an inspirational reminder of the fun and the value of reflecting on one&#8217;s own work, perhaps in the form of the work itself.   Maybe I could write a program about programming, or a grant proposal to support work that aims to propose (there already exist <a href=\"http:\/\/www.slideshare.net\/thecroaker\/death-by-powerpoint\">slides about how [not to] create PowerPoint slides<\/a>).  Surveying one&#8217;s work from a high vantage point can lead to new insights about how to improve efficiency or satisfaction&#8211;or even just how to explain what it is and why it matters to a friend or family member.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>I recently encountered a few poems about poems, in terms of both crafting and appreciating it.
