{"id":5546,"date":"2024-04-13T10:38:39","date_gmt":"2024-04-13T17:38:39","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.wkiri.com\/today\/?p=5546"},"modified":"2024-04-13T10:38:39","modified_gmt":"2024-04-13T17:38:39","slug":"a-train-on-the-moon","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.wkiri.com\/today\/?p=5546","title":{"rendered":"A train on the Moon?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>It&#8217;s still early times, but what a captivating thought!<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.darpa.mil\/program\/ten-year-lunar-architecture-luna-10-capability-study\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=floatRight width=250 src=\"https:\/\/www.darpa.mil\/DDM_Gallery\/LunA-10-619x316.jpg\"><\/a>Last year, DARPA <a href=\"https:\/\/www.darpa.mil\/news-events\/2023-08-15\">created the LunA-10 study<\/a>, a 10-year effort that &#8220;aims to rapidly develop foundational technology concepts that move away from individual scientific efforts within isolated, self-sufficient systems, toward a series of shareable, scalable systems that interoperate.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>So far, our trips to the Moon have been isolated visits, but if we&#8217;d like to get serious about sustained activity, additional infrastructure (for mobility, communication, energy generation, etc.) would surely be useful.<\/p>\n<p>Recently, Northrop Grumman provided some details about their part of LunA-10, which aims to develop a framework for <a href=\"https:\/\/news.northropgrumman.com\/news\/releases\/northrop-grumman-to-develop-concept-for-lunar-railroad\">a railroad network on the Moon<\/a>.  How cool is that? I&#8217;d love to be part of that study.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.darpa.mil\/program\/ten-year-lunar-architecture-luna-10-capability-study\">LunA-10<\/a> participant updates are planned to be shared at the <a href=\"https:\/\/lsic.jhuapl.edu\/Events\/Agenda\/index.php?id=465\">Lunar Surface Innovation Consortium meeting<\/a>, final reports from each of the LunA-10 participants will be due in June &#8211; here&#8217;s hoping they&#8217;re made publicly available.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>It&#8217;s still early times, but what a captivating thought!
